VESC Jagaddal and Sonajheel centers support 119 and 150 poor children respectively, irrespective of their caste, creed and religion. These figures are growing as both centers have earned the trust of the poor families in the community. These students come from economically backward families. They study at the VESC centers from the nursery level to the 4th standard and are then enrolled in the formal school system. They are taught Bengali, English, and Arithmetic, along with basic skills and matters of health and hygiene. The centres provide simple food for lunch. The society has made efforts to counsel the parents. Besides sending their children to school, parents are encouraged to develop saving habits. They are also encouraged to take up community projects that generate income for the community as well as individuals.
Vocational training includes tailoring, weaving, manufacturing of pickles and jam and computer training. The society also trains children in cultural activities like singing and classical dancing.
At Jagaddal premises, 6 girl students are staying – among them 2 are orphans (sisters, younger one is a thalassaemia patient) who were referred to by the District Magistrate to our centre and 2 are Scheduled Tribe girls studying in a nearby Govt. school. They are taken care of by one appointed elderly lady.
VESC publishes a bulletin “Shishu Shramik Kalyan” which highlights various type of activities undertaken by the VESC and the development and success achieved so far.
